What We Do Matters
You know what's really fascinating about life? What we do, what we think about, and how we spend our free time—it fundamentally shapes who we are. Our thoughts, especially those we dwell on most, really change us.
Something cool about one of my friends came to mind today. He loved listening to music, and sometimes he'd talk to me by recalling lyrics. It was like music was so ingrained in him that when a situation arose, a song would immediately come to mind.
I’ve listened to a decent amount of music myself, but it's never quite felt that way for me. For him, listening was an experience in itself—he’d lie down, absorbed in the music. Meanwhile, I usually listen while doing other things: walking, studying, or handling tasks. Reflecting on that today made me appreciate how deeply music became part of his thinking.
This helped me realize why reading scriptures is so important—doing it daily and consistently. One insight I particularly love about scriptures is something someone once shared with me (I wish I could remember who!). They said, "Praying to God is us talking to Him, and reading the scriptures is Him talking to us."
Scripture study is crucial because there's so much conflicting information out there. While scientific advice can be valuable, people often don't understand how imperfect some studies can be or how easily they can lead to incorrect conclusions. Relying on misleading headlines can negatively affect our behavior.
Immersing ourselves in scriptures fills our minds with something truly powerful. It's one of the best things for our thoughts and actions. While translations may introduce some imperfections, the core messages remain profound and impactful.
I’d love to share some of my favorite scriptures with you.
Book of Mormon:
Mosiah 2:17 "When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."
Alma 37:6 "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass."
2 Nephi 2:25 "Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy."
Bible:
Ecclesiastes 9:10 "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might."
Proverbs 21:5 "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty."
Mark 6:31 "And he said to them, 'Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.' For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat."
